Flavour Profile
Rieling is highly aromatic. With it’s mixed apple, peach and pear flavour with slight overtones of honey, anyone can be taken for a surprise. Its flavour is also described by many wine tasters as “Racy”. The high levels of Tartaric Acid can counter the residual sugar and thus help in contributing to its aromatic flavour.
Growth Conditions
Riesling wines are suitable for cold wine-growing climates. As the grape plants have a thick bark they are more resistant to the cold. Moreover the fruit blooms late which is an added advantage. The berries are small and round when they ripen.
However if cultivated in dry climate then the grapes get the Noble Rot. They start to grow together in clusters and do not have the same productivity. It also results in the shrivelin of the grapes and the evaporation on the grape juice. This results in increase in sugar concentration in wine grape. The grape wines wines not only have a remarkable taste but also a long life span.
Protection from winds is of vital importance for growth of Riesling wine.Though hillside climates provide with low temperatures and ample sunlight they cant protect the grapes from cold winds.
Food Pairing
Riesling wine is suitable for food pairing as its acidic and sugar content blends perfectly with food which is properly eaten. The pan fried in butter trout is specially good with Riesling. The grilled sausage with its spicy flavour also blends perfectly with this wine. Rather than the colour of the meat the sauces and spices used with its determine whther the combination of wine and food is a success or a failure. In germany Riesling is used with cabbage for cooking to reduce its smell.
Regions
Canada
Niagara is a region in Canada which is the highest producer of Riesling in the country. Its production is at par with the European countries. The climate of the region is warm and adds a layer of richness to the wine grapes. The Niagara wines are produced in different bright and dry styles and are marketed all over the world.
United States
Riesling was first grown in the New York region by the German immigrants who had settled there. Washington is another region famous for its Riesling wine production. There is a huge growth in Riesling production in this region. The annual wine bottle production from this region is about a hundred million .The wine produced from New York has a wide range of tastes from dry to sweet. Riesling which is also grown in California is not famous as Chardonnay for its production. The grapes grown in California are more rounder and fuller and do not produce the same flavour for which the Riesling wine is famous for.
Austria
The Austrian Riesling wine is famous for its aroma, though it has other beneficial properties as well. The wine is thick bodied and has a great flavour which has hints of white pepper in it. The cold climate and the mica soil allow the grapes to ripen properly which leads to better wine production.
Australia
Australian Riesling wines are k nown for their oily and smooth texture. there is a smooth balance of freshness and acid as they age. These wines have a wide range of tastes. The warmer Australian climate produces grapes which are much more thicker than the German grapes. Another speciality of Australian wines is that they can be fermented at low temperatures.
